Saving Your Natural Teeth
Endodontic treatment (or root canal therapy) is performed to save the natural tooth. In spite of the many advanced restorations available, most dentists agree that there is no substitute for healthy, natural teeth.
Main Causes of Inner Tooth Damage
Bacterial Infections
Oral bacteria is the most common cause of endodontic problems. Bacteria invade the tooth pulp through tiny fissures caused by decay or injury, leading to inflammation and potential abscesses.
Fractures and Chips
When a large part of the surface or crown becomes detached, the pulp can be exposed. This is often painful and requires therapy to save the remaining tooth structure.
Injuries
Direct or indirect blows can dislodge a tooth (luxation). Root canal therapy is often needed once the tooth has been successfully stabilized by your dentist.
Removals (Knocked Out)
If a tooth is knocked clean out, it must stay moist (in milk or dental solution). We can often save the tooth by splinting it and performing endodontic therapy.
What to Expect During the Procedure?
Preparation & Examination
Treatment usually takes 1-3 visits. We begin with comprehensive digital X-rays to examine the tooth. A local anesthetic ensures you are comfortable, and a dental dam is placed to keep the area sterile.
Cleaning & Shaping
An opening is created in the tooth surface. Our specialists carefully remove the damaged pulp using precision handheld instruments. The empty canals are then thoroughly cleaned and shaped.
Sealing & Restoration
The space is filled with Gutta-percha, a biocompatible material, and sealed with special dental cement. A temporary filling restores use of the tooth until your final visit, where a permanent crown is placed.
